Marae Visit

Recently, we went to the Marae with Model 2A and 2B. Our brilliant parent helper was: Tessa( Zed’s Mum). The bus trip was decidedly hot and long. Eventually, we saw the Marae. The sight was amazing!! We lined up, with the  girls at the front, boys at the back. Our group waited patiently for the karanga (Call).

Soon,  a faint but strong voice was ringing in our ears. Slowly, we marched up. As the voice receded, another voice started off. It was whaea Jenny. Her job was to answer the call so we could enter the Marae. By the time she had finished, we had already reached half way. The calling was carried on for about  two minutes longer. Finally, the calling ended. We looked up to the lady standing in front of us.

She smiled, greeting us warmly. ‘Welcome to the Otako Marae.’ She chorused. She led us to the entrance of the Marae, and kindly asked us to take our shoes off. Then she gently ushered us into the beautiful hall of the Marae.

Maia's Strength Goal- Argentina

Recently I presented my strength goal to the class. I shared some Enpanadas that Miss Pereira said were glorious (she even ate two!!!!!!!). Enpanadas are a type of pie looking thing and are usually filled with meat or even with vegetables. Because my family is from Argentina I thought it is important to teach the class a little bit about my culture. I taught them about a dance called the tango and told them about a tea called mate it is not drunk in a normal cup instead it is drunk in a cup made out of ether pumpkin or ceramic. I also showed them a few places in Argentina like La boca and the capital Buenos Aires.

Sports Elective

In the sport elective we have been practicing many types of sports. They include; soccer, miniball, hockey, capture the flag and dodge ball. So far we have only had the soccer competition. Next week we are going to play miniball. The names of the teams are the Short Namers, Grinders, Villans, Epics.

RULES OF SOCCER
  1. You cannot use your hands unless you are goalie.
  2. Keep both feet on the ground when throwing the ball in.
  3. You cannot kick the shins of others.
  4. You cannot be in front of the last defender when you are receiving a pass.
Every week we elect a captain and coach. They are elected for their skill at the sport. The coach has to set up a warm up and warm down and run a skills session. When it is time for the game we verse every team. Our points are tallied.
Miss Pereira runs a boot camp each week, in case you do not know it is a session where you train to get fit. When we do boot camp we run up and around the adventure play ground then go around the middle court and do that twice. Then we have the choice of doing 20 press ups our 20 sit ups. She even makes us do painful shuttles.
We really like learning new sports and skills!
